Feast of 7 Fishes

Are you Italian? Are you married to an Italian? Do you know any Italians? Have you ever heard of Italy? Then you have probably heard of the Feast of Seven Fishes, the traditional Italian meal for Christmas Eve. Why 7? Well, it's not really clear why it is 7 and, for that matter, it often is even more than 7! Some opine that 7 stands for the seven sacraments of the Catholic church. Others say it is because 7 is the perfect number in the Bible - and the most often used number in the Bible. Whatever the reason, the Feast of Seven Fishes is quite a boon for a fishmonger! If you are interested in preparing a meal of seven (or eleven or two or twenty) fishes we have a few ideas that could make it simple (find our recipes here). Kathleen's Catch sells all sorts of seafood spreads and smoked fish that can make a very nice appetizer. And may we recommend a caviar setup for the sophisticated crowd? You can't go wrong either way!

Species Spotlight: Tuna

If fish were like cars, tuna would be the Ferraris of the ocean—sleek, powerful, and made for speed. Their torpedo-shaped bodies streamline their movement through water, and their special swimming muscles enable them to cruise the ocean highways with great efficiency. These extraordinary marine animals are also integral to the diet of millions of people and are one of the most commercially valuable fish. The majority of the market is made up of four species: skipjack alone account for more than half of the global catch of tuna, followed by yellowfin, bigeye, and albacore. Tuna can be enjoyed in a variety of ways (see recipes below) but tuna sandwiches are among the most famous, especially ours!
